I finally got the Car-Net registration to work recently, following the apparent fix that VW made to their portal for Golf R registration codes. However, still absolutely no luck getting Android Auto to work (via the App-Connect functionality) despite the fact that my phone recently updated to Android 6.x which I really hoped would fix the problem.

The display on the car kept saying “connect device via USB”. The solution to the problem was to Reset the “App Connect” within the Reset Factory Settings menu. Hope this helps others  Perform the reset by holding down the left power button on the infotainment system until it turns off, keep it pressed down until the VW logo appears, showing that it has rebooted.
